Anna Politkovskaya murdered

Action Alert: Ingushetia rally in honor of Anna Politkovskaya broken up, activists injured and detained. Write to the president and prosecutor of Ingushetia to protest these actions and demand an investigation! Click here for more info
Anna Politkovskaya, the award-winning Russian journalist of international renown who wrote for the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, was gunned down in the elevator of her apartment building in Moscow in the early evening of Saturday, October 7, 2006. We are shocked, saddened and deeply troubled by this terrible news.
Anna Politkovskaya was a passionate and dedicated journalist who wrote about Chechnya like no one else did. The Chechen people have lost a great friend, Russia has lots one of its eminent moral critics and the world has lost a writer who was absolutely devoted to the truth and to the well-being of ordinary people in utterly frightening special war zones, who are abandoned by everyone else. She was the only one who spoke with clarity about them.
Write to the Russian government to demand an objective investigation of the murder of Anna Politkovskaya! Click here for form letters, email contact, addresses

Anna Politkovskaya, on her personal page at www.novayagazeta.ru.

Anna wrote gut-wrenching and distressing books, and in the last years of her life nothing alarmed her as much as the debased actions of Chechnya's prime minister Ramzan Kadyrov's followers. She was writing an article about torture by Kadyrov's henchmen, in special prisons in Tsentoroi, Kadyrov’s hometown, when she was killed. Her last article published in Novaya Gazeta a few days ago deals with the insidious effect of “Chechenization” - the strategy that she decried as the wholesale abandonment of the entire republic to rapacious and deviant criminals. Anna wrote about the murderous war and the chokehold of the Kadyrov personality cult with great force, with devastatingly precise images.

We have also lost a dear friend, someone who many of us heard speak or met at conferences and expert panels in the U.S. or in Moscow. Few could convey the horrifying reality of the war and of how it has changed people like she could, few could more effectively destroy lies and deceptions. Anna was absolutely fearless and she was one of the best-informed analysts on Chechnya. She was also the most passionate, never affected by fatigue and cynicism. There is absolutely nobody who can replace her.

The Chechnya Advocacy Network was formed out of deep concern about the alarming situation in Chechnya and the plight of Chechen refugees all over the world. We strive to raise awareness about the ongoing conflict, particularly its human dimension, advocate for a more engaged international response and work to develop adequate responses to the humanitarian crisis. We are neither pro-Chechen nor pro-Russian, but supportive of solutions that promise the best possible outcome for the people of Chechnya and the North Caucasus. As an open, non-partisan initiative we welcome everyone who shares these goals with us.
